Grand-Am on Friday said that its third-generation Daytona Prototype race car is on schedule to debut in next year’s Rolex 24 at Daytona International Speedway Jan. 28-29.

As announced previously, the new DP will be distinguished by all-new bodywork and a smaller greenhouse for better proportions. New regulations, called DPG3, will also offer more potential for brand character and design, according to Grand-Am.

Grand-Am has instituted a multiple-phase design-approval process for licensed constructors. The three active chassis constructors--Coyote, Dallara and Riley--submitted computer-aided-design models of their new DP designs earlier this month. The constructors and Grand-Am are working together toward OEM body designs applicable to more than one chassis.

Grand-Am approved the body/chassis designs from all three constructors earlier this week. This enables Coyote, Dallara and Riley to move to the next phase of design and development.

“We know our fans want to see the new cars, and we’re working diligently to provide those ‘sneak previews,’” said Dave Spitzer, Grand-Am vice president of competition. “The expectation is that by mid-August, we will be able to show images that will definitely boost interest and excitement for the Rolex 24 and the rest of the 2012 season.”

Renderings of the new DP cars are in the works, Spitzer said.
